How it works

From family file to framed poster

No design skills, no software to install, and no waiting for a designer.

Bring your tree

Open a GEDCOM export from any genealogy site or program, or type names into a simple form. Old files in ANSEL or UTF-16 encoding work too.

Pick a style

Half fan, ¾ fan, full circle, classic tree or pedigree, in six color themes. Click anyone to fix a name or date. Long names are shortened automatically.

Print anywhere

Download a vector PDF that stays crisp at any size, from a letter-size page to a 36 × 48 inch wall poster. Take it to any print shop.

Styles

Five layouts. Six looks. Your family.

Every chart is set in real book typography, with curved names in the inner rings and radial names further out. It still reads well at ten generations.

Made for real family trees

The details genealogists care about

Up to 10 generations

Real trees have gaps further back. Smart spacing gives that room to the ancestors you've found, so their names often print 2–3× larger.

Every name, spelled right

Łódź, Bjørnstad, Müller, Gutiérrez Peña. Accents and non-English letters print correctly.

Uncertain dates handled

“abt 1845”, “bet 1840 and 1845” and dual-dated years like 1699/00 all become clean, readable dates.

Edit before you print

Click anyone to fix a typo, add a missing great-grandparent, or put a different relative at the center.

Living-relative privacy

Hide the dates of living people before you share a picture online. One checkbox.

True vector PDF

Sharp lines and embedded fonts at any size. Print shops love it, and the names stay searchable.

Your family stays on your computer

Most chart sites want you to upload your whole family tree to their servers. Fan Chart Studio doesn't.

Pick the right size

GenerationsPeopleGood size
4–515–31Letter, A4 or 11 × 17 in
6–763–12711 × 17 or 18 × 24 in
825524 × 36 in or A1
951136 × 48 in or A0
101,02336 × 48 in full circle, names in fine print

These sizes assume every ancestor is known. Most trees have gaps, and smart spacing then gives the known names more room, so a smaller paper often works. The studio shows the size of the smallest names as you design and suggests a bigger paper if they'd be hard to read. Local print shops, office-supply stores and online poster printers all accept the PDF. Printing guide →

Questions

Frequently asked

What is a fan chart?

A fan chart is a family tree drawn as a half circle (or full circle). You sit at the center, your parents form the first ring, grandparents the second, and so on outward. Each generation doubles, so a fan fits many more ancestors on one page than a box chart. More about fan charts.

What is a GEDCOM file and how do I get one?

GEDCOM (.ged) is the standard file format every genealogy site and program can export. See our step-by-step guides for Ancestry, MyHeritage and FamilySearch. Don't have one? Click “Type names” and fill in a simple form instead.

Is my family data uploaded anywhere?

No. Your file is read by your own browser and never sent to us or anyone else. Your work is saved in your browser on this device so it's still there when you come back.

How big can I print it?

The PDF is vector, so it prints sharp at any size. Free charts go up to 11 × 17 in (A3). Pro adds poster sizes up to 36 × 48 in and A0. You can also scale the PDF to any custom size at the print shop.

What if some ancestors are unknown?

Unknown spots show as blank spaces you can fill in later. Or tick “Hide empty spaces” for a cleaner look. Click any blank space to add the person.

Can I fix names and dates before printing?

Yes. Click anyone on the chart to edit their name, dates and places, or to put them at the center. Changes stay in the chart; your original file isn't touched.

Can you print and frame it for me?

Yes. Click “Order a framed print” in the studio. We'll print your chart on archival-quality paper, frame it in black, white or natural wood, and ship it free within the US, usually arriving in 1–2 weeks. Only the finished chart picture is sent to the printer, never your family file.

Is Pro a subscription?

No. Pay once and keep it, including future chart styles. If it doesn't work for your family tree, email us within 30 days for a full refund.

Which browsers and devices work?

Any recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. A computer is easiest for large trees, but tablets and phones work too.
